Battle of Gall (Clone Wars)

During the Clone Wars, circa 21 BBY, a conflict erupted on Gall, a moon. The combatants were the forces of the Galactic Republic against those of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Separatist troops initiated an invasion of the lunar surface using C-9979 landing craft. These craft were shielded by an innovative Geonosian shield technology. This shield rendered the Confederate ships impervious to the blaster weaponry of the Gall defenders. However, Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, happened to be present on the moon during this assault. They devised a plan to infiltrate the lead craft which was generating the shield, and successfully detonated explosive charges within, thus eliminating the shield. Consequently, the defending forces were able to obliterate the remaining invading forces.

The battle

In approximately 21 BBY, amidst the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems launched an assault on Gall, a moon belonging to the gas giant Zhar. The attacking force consisted of Vulture droid starfighters, a pair of C-9979 landing craft, and a lead landing craft equipped with a novel deflector shield developed by the Geonosian species. This shield enveloped the entire Confederate force, permitting them to fire through it while simultaneously protecting them from incoming fire. The planetary defense force of Gall, led by a sergeant, engaged the enemy utilizing artillery and starfighters, but were unable to breach the shield's defenses.

At the time of this invasion, Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, were stationed on the moon. After receiving information from the sergeant regarding the shield's capabilities, Skywalker formulated a strategy to disable it. Armed with explosive charges, Skywalker and his Padawan commandeered two jet-wings, typically used for fertilizer application, to reach the lead landing craft. Due to their small size and design, the jet-wings evaded the ship's sensors, allowing the two Jedi to successfully land on its exterior. They managed to infiltrate the craft, although the jet-wings were destroyed by enemy fire during the process. Inside, they encountered numerous deactivated battle droids, which Skywalker deemed non-threatening, believing that all available power was being directed to the shield. Skywalker and Tano proceeded to the shield's control systems and began planting explosives.

Skywalker and Tano fight off battle droid attacks.

Once the explosives were armed with a five-minute timer, an intruder alert was triggered, and the Jedi were confronted by a substantial force of B1-series battle droids, B2 super battle droids, and B2-HA series super battle droids. Attempting to escape the vessel, Skywalker and Tano made their way to the airlock, but were overwhelmed by the droid forces. As the countdown to the explosion continued, they adopted a defensive posture and fought for their survival against the Separatist forces. Skywalker then focused his thoughts to devise an escape, recalling the behavior of womp rats from his home planet of Tatooine; when threatened, womp rats burrowed into the sand for safety.

Inspired by the womp rats' behavior, Skywalker utilized his lightsaber to create a hole in the ship's floor, into which he and Tano jumped moments before the landing craft detonated. The Jedi employed the Force to decelerate their descent, landing atop their Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptors, which had been refueled and flown there by Skywalker's astromech droid, R2-D2. With the lead landing craft destroyed, the shield was deactivated, and Skywalker was confident that the planetary defense forces would be able to successfully repel the remaining invasion force.
