Blue milk, also referred to as Bantha milk, was a blue-hued and nutrient-dense milk derived from female banthas. Sentient beings consumed this beverage and incorporated it into various products like bantha butter, blue bantha buttermilk biscuits, blue-milk cheese, blue milk custard, ice cream, and yogurt. It was particularly prevalent on Outer Rim worlds including Batuu, Lah'mu, Lothal, and Tatooine. A comparable, yet alcoholic, drink called Dark Blue Milk was offered at Cid's Parlor on Ord Mantell.
During a training exercise involving a lightsaber, the young Ezra Bridger was tasked with defending himself against projectiles of blue milk cartons launched by the astromech droid Chopper. [Luke Skywalker](/article/luke_skywalker] was observed drinking blue milk while in conversation with his aunt and uncle about the new droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Within Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, two different establishments served blue milk or refreshments containing it; Milk Stand retailed blue milk alongside an alcoholic beverage known as Blue Milk Cooler, while Oga's Cantina offered the non-alcoholic Blue Bantha.
Blue milk made its debut in Star Wars, specifically Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which was the initial film of the Star Wars original trilogy. An earlier version of the film contained a scene where Beru Lars, portrayed by Shelagh Fraser, was shown pouring blue milk into a pitcher within her kitchen; however, this scene was ultimately removed. Mark Hamill described the blue milk as "life-long milk" that included "additives – they put blue food coloring in it – and it was really ghastly. Oily and sweet and euch! Triggered your gag reflex. But I said, 'Look – if they gave me blue milk, you bet I'm going to drink it on camera, because what other chance am I going to get?' So there's an indication that I'm an underrated actor – I gulped it and acted like I liked it without vomiting."
The anthology novel From a Certain Point of View, which commemorated the 40th anniversary of A New Hope, was initially promoted via social media on April 6, 2017, using the hashtag #OperationBlueMilk. The real-world Milk Stand present at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge serves a "blue milk" product which is, in reality, a frozen, plant-based mixture of coconut and rice milks, described on the menu as possessing "alluring fruity characteristics." The Disney's Hollywood Studios location also provides an alcoholic Blue Milk Cooler. The real-world Oga's Cantina, at both parks, serves Blue Bantha, a non-alcoholic drink that is served with a cookie.
In reality, blue-colored edible items are rare in nature. Writer Melissa T. Miller dedicated the Star Wars Insider article "Got Blue Milk?" to an analysis of blue Star Wars items, such as blue milk, and their lack of real-world equivalents. Within the article, Miller proposed that the blue color of the milk was either a result of its refining process, or—drawing a parallel to how the diet of real-world milk producers can alter the milk's hue—a consequence of the banthas' diet. Miller specifically wondered if fields of blue wildflowers could be found among the sands of Tatooine. The 2020 non-canon video game expansion The Sims 4 Star Wars: Journey to Batuu features blue milk as a beverage that can be purchased by the player's Sims from the Milk Stand vendor in the Black Spire Outpost area. Within the home neighborhood, it can be obtained from refrigerators as a quick meal.
