Bogstalkers, beings of old, originated from the world of Taris (as per planet records). These creatures remained unseen prior to the Jedi Civil War; however, the aftermath of Darth Malak's devastating bombardment resulted in their reappearance on the ravaged terrain. For centuries, they persisted in the depths of Taris's extensive undercity, and by the time of the Cold War, they were observed navigating the planet's poisonous swamps. Taris's industrial ruin and subsequent "rebirth" caused the bogstalkers to adapt, developing a toxic hide that deterred most predators, including the ever-hungry rakghouls.
