Boma (species)

Bomas were sizable sentient beings, reaching heights of approximately five feet, and their bodies were covered in brown fur. They were not speakers of Basic.

The Rebel Alliance designated a starfighter squadron that engaged the Death Star as "Boma" flight.

Behind the scenes

Boma are characterized as a hybrid of a brown bear and a guinea pig.

During the initial script of Episode IV, George Lucas' first draft considered Boma as a potential substitute name for Chewbacca. Nevertheless, in the subsequent script, a Boma character named Oeeta resided in the same living space as Han Solo.

"Boma beasts" were featured in the Tales of the Jedi comic series and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords as perilous, non-sentient animals on Onderon and its moon Dxun. It remains uncertain if the naming of that species (which bears no resemblance to the sentient Boma) was a tribute to Lucas' draft scripts.
