Buoys, serving diverse purposes across the galaxy, represented a form of navigational technology. While a multitude of buoys found application within realspace, others were deployed planetside. Certain types, for example, navigation buoys, facilitated the mapping of routes through hyperspace. Sensor buoys functioned as monitors of starship movements. In the Akkadese Maelstrom, space buoys played a role in maintaining the Channel, a segment of the Kessel Run hyperspace route. Buoy droids, a type of planetside buoy, also possessed the ability to function autonomously as a droid, and were used to direct ships arriving at, and departing from, Coruscant's spaceports.
