While on a training flight above an unnamed planet, Calson flew too close to Gorjaye, resulting in his fighter clipping her wing. This caused both ships to crash in a region called the Wilds. After the crash, Gorjaye instructed him to follow her to a nearby settlement, but Calson declined to obey a female officer. Venturing off alone, he met his end, killed by a corvaj, a local predator of the Wilds.
During the Galactic Civil War, Calson, a Human male trainee starfighter pilot, participated in a training patrol commanded by Ranna Gorjaye. As they flew over a planet, Calson flew too close, his craft striking Gorjaye's wing. Gorjaye reprimanded Calson for the crash, emphasizing the necessity of following her orders for their survival. Calson, however, refused to take direction from a woman. Despite her indignation, Gorjaye, acknowledging her responsibility for her subordinate, used a directional transponder and a datapad map to locate a settlement approximately seventeen kilometers northwest of their location, suggesting they proceed there immediately.
However, Calson had different intentions. During his descent, he had observed something of interest in the Wilds and intended to investigate it. Defying Gorjaye's orders, Calson declared himself free from her command. Grabbing his survival gear, he used his blaster to clear a path through the jungle. Shortly after departing from Gorjaye, Calson was attacked by a corvaj, a predator native to the Wilds, and subsequently killed. Gorjaye survived and escaped the Wilds.
Calson, despite being a trainee pilot, lacked flying skills. His excessive confidence contributed directly to the crash in the Wilds, which ultimately led to his demise. His chauvinistic attitude caused him to reject orders from female officers like Gorjaye, even though she outranked him. Ranna Gorjaye described Calson as a "rowdy runt."
Calson's initial appearance was in the short story Survival Class, featured in The DarkStryder Campaign by West End Games in 1995. This story served to develop Ranna Gorjaye's background.
The planet where Calson died remains unnamed in the text, but Gorjaye's biography mentions flight training on Salliche and Raithal, suggesting either planet as a possibility.
