Challenge (magazine)

Challenge, a magazine focused on role-playing games, was brought to life by Game Designers' Workshop and published from 1986 to 1996. Within its pages were several adventures designed for the Star Wars D6 system by West End Games. The licensing of these adventures by West End Games and Lucasfilm remains uncertain, casting doubt on their canonicity. Despite this, some elements have found their way into official sources, such as The Essential Atlas.

History

The announcement of this new magazine appeared in Journal of the Travellers Aid Society (JTAS) No. 22. It was intended to broaden the scope of JTAS by using a larger format, and to include coverage of Game Designers' Workshop's new game, Twilight 2000, alongside other games. The increased size was specifically chosen to accommodate items like deck plans and sector maps, which were too large for the previous JTAS format.

To ensure a smooth transition for Traveller enthusiasts (and JTAS subscribers), the numbering of the first issue began at 25. Further solidifying continuity, Challenge incorporated a distinct section titled "Journal of the Travellers' Aid," which was featured until issue 28. While Traveller articles continued to be present in Challenge, the magazine's content increasingly featured other gaming systems, including Twilight 2000, 2300AD, Space 1889, and—following an expansion to 64 pages in issue 30—games from publishers other than Game Designers' Workshop.

Challenge continued its run for 53 issues, concluding with number 77, until Game Designers' Workshop ceased operations in 1996.
