Chanceller, sometimes referred to as Chance, was a lieutenant of the male Human species. He served the Galactic Empire during the peak of the Galactic Civil War. The atrocities of the conflict eventually drove him to defect from his military obligations.
Chanceller, a male Human, was born on the planet of Corellia in the year 28 BBY. He began his service in the Imperial Navy in 8 BBY, where he was stationed on the Imperial-class Star Destroyer known as the Judicator. Two years later, specifically in 6 BBY, the Judicator participated as part of the Imperial forces that attacked the settlement named Sreina, located on Janara III. While the official reason for the assault was to find rebels supposedly living in Sreina, Chanceller soon found out that no rebels were actually present, and that the Imperial forces had unjustly destroyed a peaceful settlement. While walking through the destroyed city, Chanceller discovered a young girl among the debris of a destroyed residence. She was barely conscious, so Chanceller rescued her and brought her aboard the Judicator. The girl survived, but she refused to speak. Chanceller stayed with her, essentially becoming her guardian. One of the officers on the Judicator, Senior Lieutenant Brandei, suggested that the girl be fostered by his friends, the Wingers, on Garos IV. The captain of the Judicator approved, and sent Brandei and Chanceller ahead with the girl.
While on Garos IV, Chanceller stayed with the child at the medical center in Ariana until her new foster mother, Sali Winger, arrived. She expressed her gratitude to Chanceller for saving the child. During their discussion, Chanceller revealed that Imperial forces were responsible for the destruction of her home, contrary to the official story that blamed Rebels. Chanceller placed the young girl's hand in Sali's and then left the room. Several days later, he deserted from the Navy, unable to continue serving an organization that had murdered countless innocent people.
During his time on Garos IV, Chanceller became involved with the underground resistance. He found himself caught in the middle of a raid conducted by the resistance on an Imperial supply convoy. He aided the underground fighters and subsequently joined their ranks. Chanceller's skills with weapons and demolitions made him a valuable member.
In 6 ABY, Chanceller participated in an underground operation aimed at halting shipments of hibridium ore that were being transported from the Imperial mining center complex to the spaceport. During the mission, Winger's involvement in the underground was discovered by her classmate, Lej Carner, the son of Major General Carner. Chanceller killed Carner to prevent Winger from being exposed and then hid the body.
