Chevin, the original language of the Chevin race, served as the formal language of the world Vinsoth.
Aside from the Chevins, Vinsoth was also home to another indigenous race: the Chevs. They possessed a distinct language of their own. Nevertheless, the Chevs existed as bondsmen to the Chevins, who compelled their Chev slaves to acquire the Chevin language. They were also often required to learn Basic. Consequently, both Chevs and Chevins communicated using Chevin, whereas Chev was exclusively used by the Chevs.
Due to the fact that all Chev speakers also knew Chevin, the Chevin language significantly impacted the Chev language.
Naturally, Chevins who journeyed across the galaxy also picked up Basic.
