Freighter

A VCX-100 light freighter A spacecraft type designed to transport goods from one location to another was known as a freighter, cargo ship, or barge. While smaller light freighters often possessed the ability to defend themselves against fighter-class ships, larger bulk freighters were typically less capable in combat. Due to their considerable size, reduced speed, and limited weaponry, these larger freighters presented vulnerable targets. Consequently, when traveling through more hazardous areas of the galaxy, most heavy freighters needed protective escorts. During both the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, numerous manufacturers modified freighters to serve as combat-ready starships.

The Alliance to Restore the Republic utilized freighters such as the YT-1300 light freighter called the Millennium Falcon and the VCX-100 light freighter known as the Ghost. Freighters also saw use by the Chiss Ascendancy.

Smuggling

A number of freighters found new purpose as vessels used for smuggling.

The Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han Solo, was a light freighter that was produced by the Corellian Engineering Corporation.
