Clone Marshal Commander, or simply Marshal Commander, represented the highest achievable military rank for a clone trooper commander serving in the Galactic Republic's Grand Army. These elite officers were entrusted with the command of corps-level formations composed of clone troopers. This corps-level formation was the largest military unit a clone trooper could command. Furthermore, they maintained direct communication with their assigned Jedi General. During the Clone Wars, which pitted the Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Grand Army of the Republic had a total of forty Clone Marshal Commanders, each responsible for the leadership of one of the army's forty corps.
Marshal Commanders held a position in the Grand Army of the Republic's hierarchical structure where they reported to Senior Jedi Generals, and they had authority over Senior Clone Commanders. Some of the most well-known Clone Marshal Commanders were Marshal Commander Bacara of the 21st Nova Corps, Marshal Commander Bly of the 327th Star Corps, Marshal Commander Cody of the 7th Sky Corps, and Marshal Commander Neyo of the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps.
The rank designation of Clone Marshal Commander initially appeared in "Guide to the Grand Army of the Republic," a reference piece spanning eight pages, authored by Karen Traviss and Ryan Kaufman, and featured in the 84th issue of Star Wars Insider. This issue was released by IDG Entertainment on September 26, 2005.
