Cortosis-weave refers to a swordsmithing method frequently applied to superior vibroblades and other close-combat arms when facing adversaries equipped with lightsabers was a distinct possibility. The term also described equipment manufactured using cortosis ore. The primary reason for employing cortosis-weave was to give the weapon the capacity to endure strikes from a lightsaber. These could also be created as armor or other equipment. Only a small amount of cortosis was necessary for weapons to be effective, but armor demanded a significantly larger quantity. However, the larger quantity gave wearers an added advantage: a lightsaber would shut down upon making contact with cortosis armor. Since cortosis was exceedingly scarce, it was also exceedingly costly, which led to the creation of only a few weapons and suits of armor using it. While numerous cultures created different methods to protect conventional melee weapons from sparring damage, the Echani weaponsmiths were the first to master the technique of fusing cortosis to blades in this way, doing so sometime before the Mandalorian Wars.
