Council of Reassignment/Legends

The Council of Reassignment was one of the four Jedi Councils active within the Jedi Order during the rule of the Galactic Republic. It convened in the northeast tower of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

Overview

The Council of Reassignment consisted of five Jedi Masters charged with directing the Jedi Service Corps and the Councils overseeing each branch. The Council met in the austere Council Chamber within the Jedi Temple, and members were appointed following a vote by the full membership. Two permanent members served for life or until resigning, while the remaining three rotated out after completing a five year term.Directing the Service Corps involved supervising Jedi Initiates and tracking their progress through the Jedi academy. If an Initiate failed the Initiate Trials or the Force did not want them to continue toward becoming a Jedi Knight, the Council intervened and assigned them to one of the Service Corps branches. Corps membership was often regarded as evidence of weakness or failure, though it was not. The Council emphasized that the Corps served galactic society as a Knight did, but by applying skills other than wielding a lightsaber. It also cared for Padawans who failed the Jedi Trials or were not chosen for training by a Master. Membership was not limited to those who failed at the academy; the Council also assigned fully fledged Knights and Masters to rotations in the Corps. To support the Corps's operation, the Reassignment Council established four smaller satellite Councils, each directly supervising one of the Corps branches. The Agricultural Corps was headed by a Council typically composed of Ho'Din and Ithorians, while the Medical Corps was headed by the Circle of Healers. The Educational Corps was supervised by the Librarian's Assembly and the Chief Librarian; the Exploration Corps by several ranking masters. The Reassignment Council endured for nearly the entire history of the Order, lasting until the end of the Clone Wars, when the Republic was dissolved and reconstituted as the Galactic Empire. With a Dark Lord of the Sith commanding the Grand Army of the Republic, the Council was taken by surprise when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine issued Order 66 and launched the Great Jedi Purge. After the fall of the Jedi Temple, Council members were hunted and killed, or escaped into self-imposed exile.
