Sometime in the period separating the battles of Yavin and Hoth, the Imperial Navy uncovered the base's whereabouts and dispatched the Star Destroyers named Avenger, Devastator, and Relentless with orders for its annihilation. Upon receiving intelligence of the approaching attack, General Carlist Rieekan gave the order to abandon the base. Solely Agent ZNT-8 remained, finding temporary refuge within a deep-planet survival shelter to act as an observer.
