Destroy Death Star (1978)
title: Destroy Death Star (Palitoy)
The board game titled Destroy Death Star was brought to market by Palitoy in the United Kingdom in the year 1978. It had the same title as a game that was launched in the United States the previous year.
Gameplay
Destroy Death Star utilized batteries and involved players maneuvering fighter squadrons (transparent, vibrantly colored, day-glo perspex pieces) across a blue, see-through plastic game surface. Players attempted to eliminate enemy targets (including the Death Star itself). This was done by guessing the target's location using a horizontal and vertical knob, then activating the fire button. Pressing the button activated a small light bulb below the board. If the light shined directly on a target, the target was hit and taken off the board. If not, it counted as a miss. The game's mechanics were directly derived from Palitoy Parker's game Salvo!, which debuted in 1976. Salvo! underwent superficial modifications to rebrand it from a naval combat simulation to a space-themed battle.
