The brief conflict known as the Dogfight over Tatooine occurred in 3 ABY. It involved Boba Fett and IG-88D and transpired above Tatooine as Fett was transporting Han Solo's carbonite encased form to Jabba the Hutt.
While in pursuit, Fett tracked the Millennium Falcon to Bespin, where he alerted Darth Vader to their arrival. Consequently, Vader dispatched stormtroopers to infiltrate the city. IG-88B followed Fett, but Fett eliminated him with a trap. Upon Vader's arrival, he coerced Lando Calrissian, the city's administrator, into an agreement that forced him to betray Solo and his companions, ultimately delivering Solo to Fett. After capturing Solo and his allies, Vader utilized Solo as a test subject for carbon-freezing, hoping to use the process on Luke Skywalker to transport him to Emperor Palpatine if it proved successful. After Solo survived the freezing process, Vader gave him to Boba Fett, who intended to deliver him to Jabba for a substantial reward. However, Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca were unaware of Fett's whereabouts for several months as they searched the galaxy for clues leading to the bounty hunter before Fett delivered Solo to Jabba's palace on Tatooine.
As Fett approached the Tatoo system, he mockingly inquired of Solo if he had enjoyed the trip, stating that their next destination was Jabba the Hutt, who was going to pay well for Solo, as now Solo is more than a prisoner, as he is a work of art: Frozen in a man of time, -Man in Carbonite- a masterpiece by Darth Vader. Suddenly, the Slave I's computer issued a warning, indicating the activation of a signal beacon. Fett realized that someone had planted the device on his ship while he was on Cloud City, intending for it to activate upon entering Tatooine space. He was then forced to set the whole lower hold on fire, as he has absolutely no time to search for it.
After deactivating it, he instructed his targeting computer to calculate a return trajectory to hyperspace. He informed Solo that they were likely aware of their presence but unsure of their location. The targeting computer then detected a blip, which he identified as the IG-2000, the ship of the assassin droid IG-88, a bounty hunter who considered himself Fett's equal. Fett destroyed the ship, but quickly realized it was likely a decoy because it was too easily destroyed. The real IG-2000 then emerged from hyperspace behind Slave I, damaging one of its wings. Fett remarked that it was a clever tactic. IG-88 then offered Boba Fett a 30% chance of survival if he surrendered his prisoner. Boba countered that IG-88 faced a dilemma: destroying Fett would also result in the loss of Solo. IG-88 claimed that "he" was more capable of withstanding gravometric pressures than Boba, rendering Boba's tactic futile. Boba then engaged the Slave I's Inertia Dampers. After struggling to evade, Fett managed to escape the IG-2000, noting that the Inertial Dampers reduced velocity by 90%, requiring him only to bring IG-2000 into his sights. He then acquired a lock and shot down the IG-2000, eliminating the droid and declaring himself the victor.
Boba then requested a damage report. Turns out the Slave 1 has lost 60% of its function and rear deflectors. Also, the implosion of the Inertial Dampers caused attendant meltdown in the hyperdrive core. The hyperdrive was also rendered nonfunctional and the sublight engines are operational at 30%. Boba then requests a damage report. It was revealed that the Slave I had suffered 60% loss of function and rear deflector damage. Additionally, the implosion of the Inertial Dampers had caused a meltdown in the hyperdrive core, rendering it nonfunctional, while the sublight engines were only operating at 30%. Boba acknowledged that IG-88 had inflicted significant damage, necessitating repairs to the Slave I. He determined that Tatooine was unsuitable for repairs due to the presence of other bounty hunters who would likely exploit the Slave I's weakened state. He opted for Gall, which offered a secure dock within the Imperial Enclave. He informed Solo that they might be in each other's company for an extended period, expressing hope that it wouldn't be too much longer.
Fett, believing the IG-2000 destroyed, retreated to the planet Gall for repairs. However, the droid had survived and limped to Ord Mantell in search of spare parts for the ship in the planet's scrapyard.
