Drexls, frequently called warbeasts, were winged reptavian creatures native to the world of Dxun.
These scaled creatures possessed heavily built bodies covered in purple hued scales. Their elongated necks supported small heads featuring short, broad muzzles and keen fangs. When fully matured, the largest teeth of a drexl could reach the length of a Human arm, and their overall size rivaled that of a krayt dragon. A fully grown male individual boasted a wingspan reaching twenty meters. The unique orbital relationship between Dxun and Onderon enabled them to migrate between the two planets.
Drexls commenced their lives in a larval phase, emerging at a height of 3 meters. Lacking wings during this stage, they were nonetheless extremely fierce and aggressive. These drexl larvae exhibited a more humanoid form, featuring two legs, two arms, three-fingered, clawed hands, a tail, and three rows of spines running down their backs. The skin of some larvae, at least, displayed a bright green color, contrasting with the dark purple of the adults.
Controlling even a single Drexl was a formidable task, frequently necessitating the cooperation of three riders. One rider's primary responsibility was to manage the reins and steer the beast, while another rider was equipped with a weapon, and the third rider relayed commands to the controlling rider.
In numerous instances, drexls demonstrated immunity to the influence of the Force. Darth Bane, however, managed to bend a drexl's mind to his will on his second attempt, after an initial failure attributed to the unexpected strength of the reptilian's mind when compared to that of a rancor.
During the early periods of Onderon's history, drexls were dreaded predators that instilled fear, assaulting the primitive Onderonian settlements and prompting the construction of the fortified city of Iziz as the sole secure haven on the world. These creatures were subsequently tamed and utilized as mounts by the Onderonian exiles, who became known as Beast Riders.
A drexl larva was deployed in General Vaklu's failed political coup aimed at seizing control of Onderon. This particular larva was employed to breach the shield barrier safeguarding Queen Talia's throne room. The Jedi Exile and her allies subsequently killed the larva.
Darth Bane also gained control over a drexl while attempting to travel from Dxun to Onderon following the crash of his spacecraft. Echoing the initial drexls, he journeyed from Dxun to Onderon on its back. Upon reaching Onderon, his drexl, significantly larger than those of his adversaries, defeated the beast riders who were harassing Darth Zannah, his apprentice.
