Duel on Ossus

In the year 4400 BBY, Freedon Nadd, a Jedi apprentice, found himself dueling his Jedi Master, Matta Tremayne, with lightsabers on the world of Ossus. Nadd, enraged by his lack of promotion to Jedi Knight, proclaimed himself a Knight regardless, leading Tremayne to challenge him to a lightsaber fight to prove his worth.

Nadd found it difficult to keep up with his Master's speed during their combat. After a series of exchanges, Nadd spotted a weakness in Tremayne's guard and seized the opportunity, bringing his lightsaber down with lethal intent. At that precise instant, Tremayne gazed into Nadd's eyes, and he experienced a wave of tranquility. He then understood that the entire battle was a test orchestrated by Tremayne, and Nadd realized this just before his lightsaber made contact with the experienced Master. He desperately attempted to stop his descending blade, but he was unsuccessful. Tremayne, having already deactivated her own lightsaber, was struck and immediately perished, her body vanishing into the Force, leaving only her Jedi robes behind. This action triggered his descent into the dark side of the Force. The death of his Master at his hand was the cause of his fall to the Dark Side.
