Duel on Tatooine
A lightsaber battle on Tatooine occurred in 32 BBY, pitting Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master, against Darth Maul, a Sith apprentice. Darth Sidious dispatched Maul to capture Queen Amidala of Naboo. Amidala had sought temporary sanctuary on Tatooine under Jinn's protection after escaping the Sith-supported blockade of her planet by the Trade Federation.
Maul located the Queen's royal starship on Tatooine by tracing its transmissions, confirming its presence with probe droids. As Jinn prepared to board Anakin Skywalker, his new, unofficial apprentice, onto the Queen's starship for its departure to the galactic capital, Maul ambushed him. Jinn stalled Maul, allowing the ship to escape. Maul's sudden appearance alerted the Jedi Order to the resurgence of the Sith Order, who were believed to have been extinct for nearly a millennium.
Prelude
Following the Boonta Eve podrace and the acquisition of the hyperdrive components for the Queen's starship, Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi Master, and the young Anakin Skywalker were en route to the vessel. They encountered a probe droid belonging to Darth Maul, which Qui-Gon promptly destroyed. Upon inspection, Qui-Gon discerned that they were being pursued, prompting them to hasten their pace towards the ship. During their sprint, they faced an assault from three additional probe droids armed with small laser cannons, which Qui-Gon swiftly neutralized. Simultaneously, another surviving probe informed Maul of the Jedi's whereabouts, leading the Sith Lord to rush to intercept them. The ensuing confrontation marked the first documented encounter between the Jedi Order and the Order of the Sith Lords in over a thousand years.
The duel

With Anakin and Qui-Gon nearing the ship, only a few yards away, Jinn perceived Darth Maul's impending arrival. He turned to urge Anakin to accelerate, spotting Maul rapidly approaching on his speeder bike. Anakin immediately obeyed Qui-Gon's instruction to drop, narrowly avoiding being impaled by Maul's speeder. As the speeder closed in on Qui-Gon, Maul dismounted and launched an attack on the Jedi before his feet even touched the ground. Taken aback by the Sith's swiftness and intensity, Jinn barely managed to parry the initial assault. Upon landing, Maul immediately followed up with an overhead strike, which Jinn deflected before initiating his own attack. As Maul blocked Qui-Gon's strike, Jinn commanded Anakin to board the ship and instruct them to take off.
While Anakin complied, Qui-Gon attempted to mount his own offensive, but Maul effortlessly shrugged off his overhead attack and unleashed a barrage of strikes. Jinn was relentlessly pushed back, struggling to defend himself, as his own style was defensively weak, particularly against Maul's aggressive lightsaber technique. Despite his best efforts, Qui-Gon couldn't find an opening.
When Anakin boarded the ship and informed the crew of the situation, they attempted a rescue, flying low towards the fight with the boarding ramp extended. As Qui-Gon blocked a leaping slash from Maul and countered, he noticed the approaching ship. Disengaging from the Sith, Qui-Gon quickly boarded, entering just as the hatch sealed and the ship accelerated. As the Nubian soared into the sky, Maul was left seething on the desert ground.
Aftermath

Qui-Gon later informed his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, that the mysterious assailant was undoubtedly pursuing the Queen. He also noted that the attacker displayed advanced training in the Jedi arts, leading the Jedi Master to suspect he was a Sith Lord. Qui-Gon subsequently reported the incident to the Jedi Council, and after the Blockade of Naboo concluded, they realized that this warrior was undoubtedly a Sith.
That day marked the beginning of the Sith's revenge. Darth Maul later retaliated for his defeat at the Duel on Tatooine by murdering Qui-Gon Jinn in a lightsaber duel on Naboo during the recapture of Theed Royal Palace. Kenobi later defeated Maul, who was presumed dead after being bisected and plummeting into a seemingly bottomless abyss. However, his hatred for Kenobi sustained him, and he somehow escaped Naboo, ending up on Lotho Minor for twelve years until his brother, the Nightbrother Savage Opress, discovered him.
Behind the scenes
This lightsaber duel marked the first on-screen confrontation showcasing both the Jedi and Sith at their peak. A primary objective for George Lucas in the prequel trilogy was to elevate the lightsaber battles, making them "faster and more intense." This initial duel was presented early and kept concise to provide viewers with a preview of what was to come.
The scene depicting Qui-Gon Jinn's encounter with the probe droid was initially filmed but was ultimately cut for pacing reasons, resulting in a somewhat abrupt transition showing Anakin and Qui-Gon running back to the ship when they had previously been walking calmly. However, this scene was preserved in the novelization and included in the DVD version under the title "Farewell to Jira."
