Ethnic neighborhoods on Coruscant were areas designated by the Galactic Empire for its non-human population, a direct result of its humanocentric agenda.
The Empire implemented a system of segregation, relocating alien species based on their native climates. Those hailing from frigid planets were relegated to the colder, higher regions, while those from hot, tropical environments were forced to live near the equator. Creatures adapted to underground living were confined to the dark, lower levels beneath the massive skyscrapers. While the official justification for these ethnic neighborhoods was to shield alien residents from so-called "real prejudice," their true purpose was to enforce the Galactic Empire's humanocentric beliefs.
The living conditions within these zones were substandard, and the inhabitants frequently became targets for Stormtroopers. An Imperial propaganda report by Pollux Hax claimed that the architecture of each neighborhood was designed to reflect the diverse cultures of the galaxy's alien species, though this assertion is questionable. To bolster Imperial propaganda that the alien residents were shielded from prejudice, statues commemorating alien heroes from the residents' homeworlds were placed throughout the neighborhoods. One well-known ethnic neighborhood was the Alien Protection Zone, which was also referred to as the Invisible Sector (Invisec).
