Ewok religion

The traditional belief system of the Ewoks, inhabitants of Endor (a small, forested moon orbiting the gas giant planet of the same name), was their Ewok religion. Their worship was directed towards a multitude of supernatural entities, which they referred to as either "gods" or "spirits." These deities took various forms: some were humanoid, others were tied to natural forces on the moon like the trees, wind, rain, and night, while still others were animistic. The Ewoks had a sense of closeness with their deities, believing they existed within the same realm, and frequently offered prayers and invocations to them. Given Endor's nature as a forest moon, the Ewoks frequently mythologized and revered trees.

Tree worship

The Ewoks considered the trees of Endor as possessing a living spirit that watched over and safeguarded them. Consequently, their religion forbade any harm to ancient trees, especially cutting them down. However, this religious principle did not prevent some Ewoks, such as Chukha-Trok, from pursuing work as woodcutters. Ewoks believed that trees communicated in a unique language, audible and comprehensible only to young Ewoks under normal conditions. The tallest tree on the moon, known as Father Tree, was believed to guide the Ewoks in battle. Another spirit, called the Forest Father, was thought to listen to the prayers of woklings who had become lost within the woods. Furthermore, the Great Spirit Tree, was considered to be the original tree on Endor, holding a prominent position in their beliefs.

Spirits and gods

The Ewoks mistook C-3PO for "the Golden One."

In general, spirits associated with the night were viewed with negativity: it was believed that Denlett would often trick Ewoks into walking off edges in the dark, causing them to fall to their deaths, while Heesh was known for inducing sleep in its victims. Most significantly, the ultimate evil god was known as the "Night Spirit." Believers held that this god could manifest as a spectral figure. The Wizards of the Night Spirit, a mysterious group of aliens with toothy grins, were also believed to be servants of this malevolent entity. However, not all nocturnal spirits were considered evil. Jahjee, for instance, played a more neutral role, bringing dreams to sleeping Ewoks.

On occasion, the Ewoks would mistake extraordinary individuals from off-world for their deities. A notable instance occurred when Aayla Secura, the Twi'lek Jedi Master, arrived on Endor during the Clone Wars. The protocol droid C-3PO was also confused for "the Golden One," whose arrival among the Ewoks had been predicted by their prophets.
