The Flight Branch functioned as a department within the Imperial Navy that managed the flight-related activities of battle-ready starships. Through the Navy's Starfighter Corps, this branch held authority over all Imperial starfighters, encompassing both pilots and associated support staff. The Flight Division, alongside numerous subsidiary support sections, were components of the Flight Branch.
The Flight Branch held responsibility for the Navy Order of Battle. To indicate their association with the Flight Branch, lower-ranking specialist officers, from captain and below, were given the prefix "Flight" preceding their rank. The branch also used positional titles for its pilots, such as squadron leader, wing commander, and group captain. Individuals in the Flight Branch who progressed beyond the rank of General in the specialist hierarchy frequently kept the honorary branch designation of air marshal.
