Garbage pits, alternatively called garbage chutes, functioned as disposal sites for waste materials found on both planetary surfaces and orbital habitats throughout the expanse of the galaxy. Dianogas, due to observations made on The Wheel and within a trash compactor located on the original Death Star, along with other places, were known to make their homes in these refuse repositories.
On Coruscant, garbage pits served as a mechanism for managing the planet's substantial waste production, employing a system that ejected refuse into the void of space. It was common for illicit races to take place in Coruscant's garbage pits. Contestants would affix wings to themselves and attempt to descend to the pit's base, secure a scale from the giant worms residing there, and then ascend back to the pit's edge while evading cannon fire. During one such race, Anakin Skywalker participated while being pursued by a Blood Carver called Ke Daiv. Subsequently, Obi-Wan Kenobi entered the races in order to provide assistance.
