Biography

Captain Godherdt, a Human, was an exceptional fleet engineer within the Galactic Empire's navy. His primary role involved the operation of magnetic signature sensors to monitor the structural integrity of Star Destroyer hulls. As a sensor monitor, Godherdt was assigned to the Dark Lord Darth Vader's personal flagship, the Super Star Destroyer Executor, where he tracked data concerning the Super Star Destroyer's hull integrity.

In 4 ABY, Godherdt was among the Imperial crew in a hangar bay of the second Death Star when Darth Vader came aboard the battle station to take charge of its delayed construction. Vader informed Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod, the station's commander, that Emperor Palpatine was not happy with the Death Star's slow progress and that he would be arriving soon to personally oversee the rest of the station's construction. Around the same time, Godherdt was also among the Imperial officers accompanying Vader and Jerjerrod as they walked down a corridor.

Behind the scenes

A scene from the Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back, reused from Vader's arrival on the Death Star in Return of the Jedi

Captain Godherdt's initial appearance was in the opening scene of the 1983 movie Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, where he awaited Darth Vader's arrival on the second Death Star. An uncredited actor played him. In the 2000 Death Star II Limited expansion set of the Star Wars Customizable Card Game, the character was given a name and a brief backstory.

Godherdt was originally intended to be in another scene in Return of the Jedi, which was ultimately cut from the final version of the film, according to several images on the fan Web site T-bone's Star Wars Universe. The first four of six images in the previous link show Vader and a group of Imperial officers (including Godherdt) heading towards the Death Star's docking bay to greet the Emperor upon his arrival, an extended version of a scene shown later in the final movie. A still from that deleted scene was used for the "Imperial Command" card for the Death Star II Limited set, although the card's lore never confirmed if it depicted the same event in-universe.

The 1997 Special Edition release of Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back reuses the original footage from Return of the Jedi showing Vader's arrival on the second Death Star to depict Vader's arrival aboard the Executor, after his lightsaber duel with Luke Skywalker on Cloud City. As a result, the actor who played Godherdt can be seen in The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition along with the other extras who played Imperial personnel on the Death Star. However, it is not canonically established that the Godherdt character appears in this Executor scene.
