Graham Ashley (born April 26, 1927; died October 30, 1979) was a British performer notable for his role as Gold Five, also known as "Pops", in the film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
Born in Northampton, England, on April 26, 1927, Graham Ashley later embarked on an acting career in both film and television starting in the mid-1950s. He was cast as one of the Rebel pilots in the movie originally known as Star Wars, which is now titled Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Ashley played Gold Five, whose nickname was "Pops," and this character resonated with the audience. The Expanded Universe later expanded on the character of Pops, giving him the full name Davish Krail.
Following his involvement in Star Wars, Ashley pursued further acting opportunities, taking on minor roles in films and securing a prominent role as "Grumpy" Garfield, the school caretaker, in the early seasons of the television program Grange Hill. Sadly, Ashley passed away in his home country of England on October 30, 1979, before the third season of Grange Hill was broadcast.
