The graiveh originated on the planet Ealor and were a pre-sentient, humanoid species.
These tall humanoids possessed fur. Their main source of food was tantlas, but they also consumed some plants and the eggs of a large bird local to their planet. These creatures formed lifelong pair bonds and were members of a multi-generational herd made up of an equal number of males and females. This was because each birth always resulted in twins, one male and one female. Upon reaching maturity, the twins would leave their family herd and search for another twin pair. After bonding, each couple would go back to each family group to guarantee genetic diversity.
Graiveh lived in herds ranging from 34 to 40 members and were believed to be approaching sentience. Their hunting strategy was altruistic: the strongest and healthiest members would venture out to find food and bring it back for everyone to share equally. Graiveh hunted during the night, capturing their prey with leaping attacks instead of stealth. When the herd came under attack, the oldest members would remain behind to fight, creating a diversion so the rest of the herd could escape to safety.
Although it was against the law to kill a graiveh or take it from its home planet, they were sometimes discovered in unauthorized zoos or research facilities. Due to several ambiguities in Imperial law, there were whispers that the Empire was trying to breed graivehs in order to develop a more intelligent but compliant slave workforce.
