An aromatic device known as an gruu pipe, originating from Esoom, was smoked to enhance perception. The Sarkan exile Melas grew to enjoy smoking a gruu pipe during his journeys, and was seldom observed without it.
The gruu pipe's initial creation was for the 1997 Special Edition of the 1977 movie Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. It was initially documented in Star Wars Trilogy Sourcebook, Special Edition, a Star Wars Legends resource authored by George R. Strayton, Paul Sudlow, and Eric S. Trautmann for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, which was published on October 1, 1997.
