Gunner Groth, also known as Dengar Roth, was a bounty hunter of limited skill.
Groth, better equipped for protecting small-time crime bosses or finding people who owed money, aspired to hunt bigger game: the criminals listed on the Galactic Empire's Locate and Detain List. To intimidate his targets and get bigger rewards from Imperials, he carried ID that said his name was Dengar, hoping to capitalize on that hunter's fame.
Groth found Mara Jade on the world of Rishi. Believing she would be an easy target and that she could lead him to Talon Karrde's whole operation, he set a trap for Jade, killing an unfortunate bystander to make it look like a poorly executed ambush by an amateur. Sadly for him, Jade used the Force to reverse the situation, resulting in his death.
His corpse remained undiscovered for several hours.
