Horranths were flesh-eating, reptilian creatures originating from the planet Tython, situated within the Deep Core region; their carnivorous nature defined their diet. These four-legged beasts, characterized by their short, thick legs and a series of horns running along their backs, were generally observed in small groups inhabiting the verdant mountainous terrains of their native homeworld.
Horranths reproduced at a rapid pace; the female horranths were capable of producing hundreds of eggs. However, their population was usually kept in check by a scarcity of food. The high reproductive rate of horranths led to a rapid expansion of their population whenever food became abundant. These creatures would gather into large familial units, known as broods, and these groups frequently exhausted the resources of their environment following a surge in population.
