A crucial element for initiating a starship's hyperdrive was the hypermatter reactor igniter, often called an HMRI. Without this component, the jump to hyperspace could not be started. The HMRI required a warm-up period following installation to become operational. After activation, the hyperdrive was able to engage on its own.
