Imperial throne

The Emperor web - TCG A look at one of the Imperial thrones, specifically the one located aboard the second Death Star during the events of 4 ABY. The Imperial throne served as the formal seat of power for the head of the Galactic Empire, also known as the Galactic Emperor. Its design was relatively unadorned, consisting of a simple, rotating contoured chair, largely due to its occupant, Emperor Palpatine, who favored simple robes and a cowl. The armrests featured control keys that allowed the Emperor to communicate with Imperial officers, activate a personal shield generator, and summon the Royal Guard. The throne's design was influenced by the Chair of Office from the era of the Galactic Republic.

Specifically, the throne found on the Death Star II incorporated control panels on one armrest. These panels enabled the physical rotation of the massive throne itself. Additionally, secure light-beam communication links were present, allowing the Emperor to call upon various personnel stationed on the battle station. This included advisors, Darth Vader, the Death Star's commander, and members of the Imperial Guard. Beyond the hidden personal deflector shield generator, the throne also featured construction from multiple layers of an extremely dense alloyed armor.

During the early years of the Galactic Empire, one of these thrones was equipped with explosives as part of an assassination attempt on Palpatine, orchestrated by the Heinsnake Cult. This attempt was thwarted by Darth Vader's swift response, as he used the Force to push Palpatine away from the booby-trapped throne. Vader then used the Force to propel the throne out of a window moments before it detonated.
