The IN-4 information droid from Veril Line Systems, alternatively referred to as the IN-series information droid, stood out as a highly familiar droid for individuals traversing space during the Rebellion era.
Frequently confused with the EG-series power droids, the IN-4 droid was engineered as the pinnacle of user-friendly data retrieval droids of its period. Commonly encountered in virtually every starport throughout the galaxy, this droid facilitated streamlined data access for travelers, enabling them to investigate flight schedules, regional traditions and regulations, along with fundamental research and correspondence.
Despite being designed as the most effective data-access solution for starports, its internal memory was limited to a maximum of twelve languages. In instances where the droid couldn't comprehend a user's language, it would attempt to locate a translation on the planetary network; if unsuccessful, it would present a network translation in Basic on a compact display.
IN-4 droids were programmed to prevent unauthorized data extraction from secure networks. Nevertheless, both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire exploited these droids for clandestine operations. Rebel infiltrators regularly repurposed IN-4s as covert data exchange points, while Imperial Intelligence deployed reprogrammed IN-4s as intelligence-gathering assets.
As this practice gained widespread recognition, many IN-4 units were shunned due to concerns about becoming targets for COMPNOR.
