Acceleration compensator

InertialDampeners-XWM Pilots relied on inertial dampeners to shield them from the extreme gravitational forces encountered during aerial combat. The technology referred to as the acceleration compensator – also going by names such as inertial damper, inertial compensator, deceleration compensator, deceleration equalizer, or even drive compensator – was implemented in starships, notably starfighters and other vessels designed for high performance. Its purpose was to counteract the substantial accelerations experienced by spaceships during their typical operations. Without these compensators, spacecraft would be limited to much slower acceleration rates, or the excessive g-forces would lead to incapacitation or even death for those on board.

A typical Human could withstand approximately 5 _g_s, whereas a trained individual wearing a flight suit could generally endure around 9 _g_s without adverse effects. Even massive vessels, like the Executor-class Star Dreadnought, could achieve accelerations exceeding 1000 _g_s, far beyond what is survivable without assistance. This made inertial compensators a necessity on nearly every spacecraft.

Seasoned pilots would frequently reduce the power of the inertial compensators from their maximum setting (adjusting them from 97 to 95 percent). This provided just enough sensation of inertia to give feedback on the ship's performance, without compromising the pilot's control.

While primarily utilized in starships, an inertial compensator could also be integrated into an airspeeder. For instance, Senator Simon Greyshade incorporated one into his customized Narglatch XJ-6 airspeeder to safeguard passengers from the vehicle's intense maneuvers.

Inertial compensators also found application in simulators, enhancing realism by generating artificial acceleration sensations. Furthermore, they were employed within the turbolifts of the Senate Building.

During the period of the Yuuzhan Vong War, modifications to inertial compensators became crucial to counteract the shield-draining capabilities of the dovin basals.

Behind the curtain

The 1998 edition of the Star Wars Encyclopedia includes an entry for "acceleration compensator," stating their presence in "medium- and larger-sized spacecraft such as the Millennium Falcon." However, earlier publications, such as X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, depict acceleration compensators within X-wings.

The relationship between inertial compensators and repulsor-compensators is ambiguous, with their functions potentially overlapping or being distinct.
