Publisher's summary

As the Jedi Order collapses, an Inquisitor emerges.

Iskat Akaris, a Padawan, has devoted her life to journeying across the galaxy with her master, learning the Force's ways to become a virtuous Jedi. Despite Iskat's commitment, serenity and command have eluded her, and with every failure, she senses her Jedi peers becoming increasingly wary of her. Already doubtful about her place within the Jedi Order, Iskat is confronted with tragedy when her master perishes and the Clone Wars plunge the galaxy into turmoil.

Now serving as a general on the front lines, contributing to the very chaos she wishes to quell, she is frequently reminded: Place your faith in your training. Place your faith in the Council's wisdom. Place your faith in the Force. However, as shadows of uncertainty creep in, Iskat starts posing questions that Jedi are forbidden to ask: Questions regarding her own obscure origins. Questions that the Jedi Masters would deem perilous.

As the years advance and the war persists, Iskat's confidence in the Jedi diminishes. She believes she could accomplish more to safeguard the galaxy if they granted her greater autonomy. She believes she could finally dispel the shadows that are beginning to engulf her if they entrusted her with more knowledge. When the Jedi Order ultimately crumbles, Iskat seizes the opportunity to chart her own course. She welcomes the deliverance of Order 66.

As an Inquisitor, Iskat discovers the freedom she has always yearned for: the freedom to question, to desire. And with each swing of her red blade, Iskat draws nearer to realizing her new destiny in the Force—regardless of the consequences.
