The scarcely seen and mysterious jackelope was a diminutive, horned being that originated on the world of Douglas III, a planet found within the Centrality region of the galaxy. The renowned game hunter, Mendel Douglas (the namesake of Douglas III), journeyed across the planet in an attempt to obtain the jackelope's pelt. Douglas managed to add the jackelope to his collection, but perished during the venture.
Around 3 BBY, the Poly Pyramid, a working-class bar located on the Centrality planet Rafa IV, showcased a collection of badly taxidermized galactic animals as decoration, affixed both to the walls and hanging from above. Among these creatures was a jackelope hailing from Douglas III.
The author L. Neil Smith first brought the jackelope into Star Wars lore in the 1983 book, Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu. This novel marked the beginning of The Lando Calrissian Adventures series.
The jackalope, in North American folklore, is a mythical animal that possesses the body of a jackrabbit coupled with the antlers of a pronghorn antelope. Douglas Herrick, a taxidermist from the twentieth century, is recognized for creating the American jackalope, which became a popular tourist attraction in his hometown of Douglas, Wyoming, where one can even purchase jackalope hunting licenses.
