Kharzet III, situated in the Mortex sector of the Outer Rim Territories, was a planet that remained unmapped as of 3 ABY. Its dense, verdant forests supported a rich assortment of flora, and also a distinctive species of gundark referred to as the long-necked gundark. Following the Battle of Hoth, Princess Leia Organa and C-3PO explored the planet as a potential site for the Rebel base, but they were soon forced to evacuate due to an assault by long-necked gundarks.
The first appearance of Kharzet III was in Star Wars 51: Resurrection of Evil, which was penned by Archie Goodwin and published in 1981. Despite not being named in its initial debut, the planet was later given a designation in The Essential Guide to Alien Species, a reference book from 2001, which referenced the peculiar gundark species depicted in the comic.
