Koaan, situated not far from Nar Shaddaa, was a planet described as having a temperate climate and numerous green hills. The Galactic Research Academy made its home on this world. This academy served as the central hub for the data sent by exploration party after they found new planets. The speed of this processing was significantly reduced once the Galactic Empire took over, and some regarded it as a handy place to find planets that were empty.
Mammon Hoole, an anthropologist who previously worked for the Academy, knew the planet well, and in 1 ABY, he journeyed there with his proteges with the intention of extracting the coordinates of an unknown planet from the Academy's databanks. However, Boba Fett, a bounty hunter, had secretly boarded their vessel, forcing them to evacuate in an escape pod that ultimately crash-landed on the planet. Platt Okeefe, a smuggler, was also on the planet with the same goal, and the two parties eventually journeyed from Koaan to Dagobah.
Although the planet saw minimal Imperial activity in the initial years of the Empire's rule, stormtroopers were stationed there during the Rebellion as part of the Empire's plan to exert control over all scientific facilities.
