Laser pistol was a catch-all phrase encompassing a number of different kinds of portable blasters.
Behind the scenes
In the screenplay for the original film, the expression "laser pistol" is employed to describe a range of weaponry wielded by characters such as Princess Leia, Ponda Baba, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker. This phrase appears exclusively in the descriptive passages of the script, never in spoken words; consequently, it is absent from the final version of the movie, which instead favors "blaster" as the common, in-universe designation.
The expression, along with variant spellings like lazerpistol and lazer pistol, was present in earlier iterations of the Episode IV script. As part of its initial Star Wars toy line launched in 1977, Kenner manufactured a toy marketed as a "laser pistol." This toy was designed to resemble Han Solo's pistol as seen in A New Hope.
