The Luftberry circle represented a strictly defensive aerial maneuver; it required multiple flights of starfighters operating in unison and consisted of establishing a level, circular formation when under attack. The idea was that each starfighter would offer protection to the one immediately ahead of it. The belief was that any attacking starfighter would be unable to target any member of the formation without simultaneously being targeted by return fire. This tactic was conceived for use by slower and less maneuverable spacecraft when facing attack from enemy fighters. Luftberry circles found their primary application among bomber spacecraft, but there were also cases of outdated starfighters adopting Luftberries as a means to evade dog fights with more modern fighter models. Bomber formations employing Luftberries frequently possessed the advantage of dorsal gunners, which further deterred potential attackers.
