Lupita Nyong'o, an actress born on March 1, 1983, is known for her motion capture performance as Maz Kanata in both Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. She is also recognized for her roles as Patsey in the 2013 historical drama 12 Years a Slave, Nakia in the 2018 Marvel superhero film Black Panther and its 2022 sequel, and as the lead in the 2019 horror film Us.
The initial announcement of Nyong'o's participation in the Star Wars franchise was made on June 2, 2014. In Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, she returned to voice Maz Kanata; however, the character's physical presence was achieved through an animatronic puppet instead of motion capture technology.
