Maelstrom (Maelstrom-class)

Maelstrom was a warship utilized by the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars conflict.

Key Attributes

Serving as a relatively sizable capital ship, the Maelstrom belonged to the Maelstrom-class battle cruiser series.

Its design featured a winged spaceframe, reminiscent of the dagger-hulled Star Destroyer aesthetic. At its rear lay a cluster of primary engines, complemented by robust bow thrusters intended for atmospheric entry and planetary landings, a function it rarely performed.

Referred to as a cruiser—sometimes as a battle cruiser or even a command cruiser—the Maelstrom possessed the capability to command a small fleet. While also termed a gunship, this designation was also applied to smaller cruisers, such as the Carrack-class light cruiser of the era. Its documented service primarily occurred during the latter stages of the Clone Wars, under the command of a Jedi General and a crew seemingly composed entirely of clone troopers, suggesting its affiliation with the new dagger-hulled warship classes within the Grand Army of the Republic.

The Maelstrom's arsenal included a formidable turbolaser battery, capable of inflicting significant damage during planetary bombardments, along with proton torpedo launchers, able to unleash volleys of up to one hundred torpedoes. A potent tractor beam array, designed for grappling large capital ships, was situated on the dorsal hull, just above the bow, within an emplacement that also housed the forward turbolaser battery.

Hangar bays extended along the hull's length, typically sealed by external hatches, facilitating the deployment of the cruiser's starfighters and housing smaller vessels, including the commanding officer's personal starfighter and a hyperdrive-equipped combat shuttle known as the Squall. Internally, the docking complex revolved around a central main hangar, connected to subsidiary bays via turbolift systems, such as the secondary shuttle bays where the Squall was stationed.

While capable of deploying ground troops for surface assaults, the Maelstrom's ground force complement may have been limited. Its main functions appeared to be space combat and orbital bombardment, with the only infantry unit specifically mentioned being a squad of elite ARC troopers, assigned as the Jedi General's personal guard.

Gunships manned by clone pilots were part of the fleet commanded by the Maelstrom during the Battle of Kromus, possibly LAAT/i troop carriers, space-combat vessels like the Skipray, or even smaller capital ships.

Historical Context

During the Clone Wars, when Jedi Masters and Padawans from the Almas Academy were summoned to the front lines, the Maelstrom was dispatched to the Cularin system to gather them. Several senior Jedi exercised the Right of Denial, relinquishing their Jedi status rather than participating in the war, leaving Jedi Master Darrus Jeht as the highest-ranking member of the Order among those who boarded the Maelstrom and departed the system.

While the other Jedi were assigned to various military positions, Jeht assumed command of the Maelstrom and a squadron of smaller warships, attaining the rank of Jedi General within the Grand Army of the Republic, and potentially also the role of captain aboard the cruiser itself.

The Kromus Engagement

After several months of combat, the Maelstrom received orders to proceed to the Kro'eval system, where the Confederacy of Independent Systems was developing a superweapon platform known as Starkiller.

At the outset of the battle, Jeht employed a diversionary tactic to draw away the defending CIS fleet, enabling the Maelstrom to enter orbit above Kromus without opposition and bombard the Separatist facility on the surface, where the Starkiller was under construction. However, the cruiser's crew discovered that the data on Kromus had been inadvertently swapped with that of its neighboring planet, Kromol. Instead of a facility on an uninhabited world, the shipyard was located within a city of two million inhabitants on a planet with a population of 1.3 billion.

Upon detecting the Starkiller's launch from the surface, Jeht issued the order to fire. The superweapon's destruction obliterated the city and its inhabitants in under a minute, triggering a cataclysm that engulfed Kromus, igniting the atmosphere, shattering the crust, and ultimately resulting in the deaths of over a billion sentients.

The Maelstrom and its fleet were recalled to Coruscant so that General Jeht could provide an explanation for his actions. This consisted solely of a private meeting with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who surprised Jeht by commending his resolve and ability to make difficult decisions. Flattered, but somewhat perplexed, Jeht returned his flagship to Cularin to consult with the other Masters of the Almas Academy.

The Cularin Conflict

Subsequently, the Maelstrom continued its service on the front lines, with Jeht growing increasingly impressed by the accuracy and insight of Palpatine's leadership, yet still haunted by the memories of Kromus's destruction. On the 22nd day of the Fifth Month, 19 BBY, the cruiser was ordered to attack the CIS mining planet of Corlax 4. The mission's primary objective was to bombard the planet itself, eradicating its civilian population of three hundred million, with the destruction of the orbital processing facilities and the defending fleet as secondary objectives.

As the Maelstrom prepared for the attack, General Jeht received news that the Academy on Almas had been destroyed, prompting him to order the cruiser's return to Cularin, inwardly relieved by his decision to defy his orders, but puzzled to discover that the ship was being trailed by a cruiser-sized sensor ghost.

At that moment, Palpatine issued Order 66, initiating the Jedi Order's extermination. Alerted through the Force by the death of his friend Aayla Secura, General Jeht thwarted an ambush by his own ARC troopers and managed to disrupt long-range communications aboard the Maelstrom, preventing the rest of the crew from learning the truth and maintaining his command.

The Maelstrom returned to the Cularin system, where it encountered the Republic cruisers Primal and Undaunted, destroying a flotilla of Jedi vessels above Almas. Jeht convinced his crew that the cruisers had been seized by Separatist forces and defeated them both, only for another ship to emerge from hyperspace at the system's edge. This was the sensor ghost from Corlax 4, the Shadowblade—apparently the same Starkiller superweapon they believed they had destroyed at Kromus.

Jeht realized the extent of his manipulation and betrayal, learning that the Shadowblade was en route to Cularin, presumably with the intention of annihilating the planet. He ordered the Maelstrom to pursue the Shadowblade through the system's asteroid belt, but its turbolasers were disabled following the battle with the cruisers, and its engines were damaged.

After attempts to ram the enemy ship and attack it with torpedoes proved unsuccessful, the Maelstrom employed its powerful bow tractor beam to capture the Shadowblade, dragging it into one of the space-time rifts that permeated the Cularin system. Instantly, both ships vanished from that point in time.

Behind the Curtain

The Maelstrom is featured in Wizards of the Coast's Living Force (roleplaying campaign) narrative.
