Maris Magneta was a female Human who held the position of chief in the Royal Naboo Security Forces under the reign of King Ars Veruna of Naboo. Following Veruna's initial abdication in 33 BBY, and his subsequent assassination, Magneta resigned from her post; the new regent, Padmé Amidala, then replaced her with Captain Quarsh Panaka. Though initially unaware of the details surrounding Veruna's assassination, she ultimately discovered the involvement of Hego Damask, a businessman from Muunilinst, and "his puppet," Palpatine.
Prior to the Invasion of Naboo, Maris had become aware of Damask's complicity, but she was subsequently killed in a brutal manner by Darth Maul, who snapped her neck. Maul—after some contemplation that brought him to a place of disenchantment with the ideas of "contract" and "honor"—was taken aback by the apparent violation of the millennia-old Sith Rule of Two by his Master, Darth Sidious, who had seemingly acquired his own apprentice while two Sith Lords were still alive and ostensibly bound by that age-old, dark agreement.
