The book Star Wars: Smuggler's Guide, released in 2018, marks the initial mention of the Mark VII gladiator droid. This book was written by Daniel Wallace and brought to publication by Chronicle Books. Conversely, the Mark VII experimental prototype assassin droid made its debut much earlier, in the 2003 Star Wars Legends video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was a product of BioWare's development efforts and LucasArts's publishing.
