An aggregation of unpaid combatants was led by Captain Merumeru in 19 BBY during the Battle of Kashyyyk; these soldiers were part of an army. Wookiees from every corner of the planet hurried to protect the coastal city's fortifications at Kachirho when news circulated throughout Kashyyyk that the Separatist Droid Army was preparing an invasion. During the conflict, Merumeru's volunteer force engaged in the ground combat as one component of a more extensive Wookiee military that also utilized aerial vehicles. The Wookiees were supported by Clone troopers from the Grand Army of the Republic as well as a number of Jedi Masters.
