Typically, these stations employed technologies like manipulator arms or tractor beam systems to capture the desired materials. In contrast to shaft mines, which were permanently situated on the surfaces of planets or other celestial objects, mining stations operated in space. Frequently, mining guilds, either privately held or state-operated, oversaw the operations of these mining stations.
