The Alliance to Restore the Republic undertook the operation to Desolation Station as a component of Operation Skyhook. Desolation Station's function involved the production and shipment of parts for the Death Star that was under construction. The operation's conclusion was the destruction of Desolation Station.
X2 was sent to an asteroid field with the objective of infiltrating Desolation Station. This facility served as a place where the Empire assembled parts for the Death Star before they were shipped to the Death Star's construction site. Given that a transport had already departed from Desolation Station carrying the final superlaser component and was headed to the Death Star construction site, Kota advised that the shield corridor protecting the transport should be disabled first. This was because there was no way for X2 to board the vessel while the shield corridor was still active. Kota cautioned X2 to proceed carefully, anticipating that the controls would be heavily guarded by the Empire, based on his understanding of Imperial operations.
After clearing the hangar of Stormtroopers, Kota informed X2 that intelligence reports indicated the Empire was holding Wookiee prisoners on Desolation Station. This prompted X2 to eliminate the security forces around the prison and liberate the Wookiee captives. Subsequently, he successfully reached the shield generator room, and after eliminating the personnel present, he managed to deactivate the shield corridor. Regrettably, this action also triggered an alert throughout the station, and reinforcements were dispatched to confront X2 as he proceeded to the TIE Fighter Combat Hangar to commandeer one of the TIE fighters.
Having successfully stolen a TIE fighter, X2 was forced to engage in combat with other TIE fighters to reach the transport. After destroying several TIEs, X2 spotted some X-wings and identified himself as an ally, instructing them not to fire. The Rebel wingmen responded with amusement, revealing that they had been sent by Kota to keep the TIEs occupied while X2 focused on seizing control of the transport and preventing the delivery of the tri-beam superlaser component. However, before boarding the transport, he needed to eliminate its defenses. Following this, he eliminated several Stormtroopers to gain access to the weapon room. He then employed the Tributary superlaser to obliterate Desolation Station.
Kota praised X2 for the operation's success, highlighting its significant impact on delaying the Empire's production timeline. He also speculated that the Rebel Alliance might find a use for "a scrapper like [X2]." He then instructed X2 to return to base so that the Alliance could formally induct X2 into the Rebellion.
In a parallel scene, X1 encountered the surviving commanding officer, mentioning that he had just received a briefing on the unfortunate events that transpired at Desolation Station. The commanding officer assumed that X1 was upset, to which X1 denied. X1 then made the decision to execute the officer while the latter attempted to shift the blame onto someone else.
