The MK-series maintenance droid was a type of repair droid that was produced by Kalibac Industries.
This MK-series model was created to function as an assistant, and sometimes the only, mechanic on a starship. It possessed tracked movement and a sophisticated heuristic processor. The engineers at Kalibac aimed for this droid to be competent in any situation, even those that were unforeseen or novel. To achieve this, they consulted with various starship engineers, spaceport mechanics, and potentially even outlaw techs, striving to make the droid as similar as possible to a living mechanic.
Although this enabled the droid to devise inventive solutions to problems, it also caused it to develop certain personality traits. MK-series droids were often aggressive and incautious, due to their strong belief in their ability to repair both themselves and their ships.
The initial cost of a new MK-series droid was 11,080 credits.
MK-09, also known as Emkay, was a member of the MK-series.
The droid series of MK-09 was initially mentioned on a LucasArts website that provided details about parts of the then-newly launched Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, referring to it as the "MK-09 maintenance droid". Later, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia changed the series' designation to the "MK-series maintenance droid".
