Monitor pad

A component of a face breather, similar to that utilized by Deeve, who was a scout working for the Bureau of Scouting and Exploration Services, was the monitor pad. By touching it with the tongue, the device could be triggered, which would then start a rapid evaluation of the surrounding atmosphere, indicating if it was safe for respiration.
