Oku cargo cult

On the distant world of Tokmia, found within the planet's orbit, the indigenous Oku species developed a cargo cult after Figg Excavations stopped their mining operations. Throughout the period that Tokmia's mineral resources were being extracted, Figg's workforce regularly distributed gifts to the local Oku people during each phase of the operation. After the miners left the planet, the Oku started constructing enormous fires that mimicked landing lights, with the expectation that the magical starships belonging to the space travelers would eventually come back.

Behind the scenes

The Oku cargo cult bears a striking similarity to actual cargo cults observed in our world, especially those that arose among certain unsophisticated Pacific island communities following the conclusion of World War II. As an illustration, Melanesians who had seen the immense flow of military supplies from both the US and Japan during the war, ignited fires as signals on unused airstrips following the war's end, in the hope of enticing the return of the foreign powers and their manufactured products.
