Operation Cobolt

Operation Cobolt, alternatively referenced as the Cobolt Offensive, designated the clandestine military operation involving a swift attack executed by the Rebel Alliance against an Imperial installation.

Background

Sanctioned by Commander-in-Chief Mon Mothma during the Alliance High Command's 251st assembly, Operation Cobolt's strategic framework was devised by General Crix Madine and its execution was overseen by Colonels Anna Seertay, Gharon, and Toombs. The core objectives of this operation centered on seizing a novel Imperial Intelligence Scandoc encryption device, followed by the facility's complete destruction. The targeted site was an Imperial space station in orbit around Mantooine, situated within the Atrivis sector. This endeavor represented a synchronized effort involving Alliance Special Forces, Starfighter Command, and Atrivis Sector Forces.

Operational Execution

Prior to the main assault, a covert team of Infiltrators, disguised as an Imperial supply contingent, gained entry into the facility. Simultaneously, Alliance starfighters initiated an attack on the base, aiming to divert TIE Fighters and sow disarray. The Infiltrators then proceeded to disable the facility's protective shields, communication networks, and defensive systems. With the external defenses neutralized, an assault shuttle, supported by Marines, breached the cargo bay doors, enabling a Wolden-class shuttle carrying the primary assault team to land within the cargo bay.

Subsequently, three distinct assault teams, each comprising 20 Special Forces Marines, two heavy weapons squads, two technicians, and a medic, assumed operational control. The first team, designated Black Team, targeted the facility's power station, rendering it inoperable. The second team, White Team, spearheaded the assault on the Intelligence Center housing the Scandoc. Red Team was strategically positioned as a reserve force. White Team successfully acquired the Scandoc, but required reinforcement from Red Team due to escalating Imperial resistance. Black Team also achieved its objective, but was ultimately overwhelmed by Stormtroopers and suffered heavy casualties. As the TIE Fighters began their withdrawal towards the base, the surviving Alliance forces retreated back to the cargo bay, boarded their vessels, and evacuated. With its power supply offline, the base gradually descended into Mantooine's atmosphere, resulting in its complete destruction.

Consequences

The overall casualties included thirteen starfighters along with their pilots, four starfighters sustaining damage, and sixty-eight soldiers killed in action, including Colonels Seertay and Toombs, which resulted in nearly 62% losses for Special Forces.
